About iTrustCapital

iTrustCapital is one of the leading crypto IRA investing platforms that began in 2018. But despite being just a few years old, the company already has over 100,000 accounts and has processed over $4.5 billion in transactions.

According to its website, iTrustCapital aims to disrupt the traditional self-directed IRA industry by reducing fees and increasing transparency through blockchain technology.

This is a large claim. But iTrustCapital lets you open an account within minutes, trade crypto 24/7, and has a transparent and simple fee structure that’s also competitive. It’s an easy-to-use platform, and the company has quickly grown into one of the top crypto IRA options on the market.

What It Offers

Crypto IRA investing is the name of the game at iTrustCapital. Currently, investors have access to 25+ cryptos.

You can also invest in precious metals. Overall, iTrustCapital is one of the simplest ways to add cryptocurrencies and precious metals like gold and silver to your retirement accounts thanks to its range of offerings.

Multiple IRA Account Types

iTrust capital supports three different account types:

  • Traditional IRA
  • Roth IRA
  • SEP IRA

As for funding your account, you also have several options. The first is to transfer an existing IRA into your new iTrustCapital account. There aren’t any fees or penalties for transfers, and you can also move an existing crypto IRA from another provider to iTrustCapital if you want a change.

Alternatively, you can rollover an employer plan like a 401(k) or 403b to fund your account. Finally, you can make cash contributions in USD based on your yearly contribution limits.

Invest In Cryptocurrencies

There’s a $1,000 minimum to open your iTrustCapital account. Once you fund your account, you can invest in 25+ cryptocurrencies directly through your account without having to use third-party exchanges.

Some popular cryptocurrencies iTrustCapital supports include:

  • Aave
  • Bitcoin
  • Cardano
  • Chainlink
  • Ethereum
  • Polkadot
  • Polygon
  • Shiba Inu
  • Solana
  • Tezos
  • Uniswap

Additionally, iTrustCapital supports some pretty unique altcoins. For example, it lets you invest in tokens from popular play-to-earn crypto games like Axie Infinity and Decentraland. You can also invest in up-and-coming altcoins like Compound and Cosmos.

Placing trades is also straightforward. iTrustCapital has a built-in trading portal where you can buy and sell various cryptos without having to leave the platform. You can trade 24/7, and iTrustCapital uses Coinbase as its custodian. This means your crypto is securely held in cold storage, and you don’t need your own crypto wallet since iTrustCapital and Coinbase handle the technical side of things.

Precious Metal Investing

Through its partnership with VaultChain, iTrustCapital lets you trade investment-grade gold and silver. Like crypto, you place trades through your account’s trading portal, so you don’t need to go off-platform to invest in alternative assets.

Gold and silver you purchase is held at the Royal Canadian Mint. This means it’s a physical asset and you’re not trading futures or financial contracts. Assets are also guaranteed by the Royal Canadian Mint, which is a Crown corporation run by the Government of Canada.

Precious metal trading fees include:

  • Gold: $50 over spot per ounce.
  • Silver: $2.50 over spot per ounce.

Referral Program

If you refer a new customer to iTrustCapital who ends up funding their account, you get a $100 USD bonus.

This referral program is subject to change or cancellation. However, it’s a nice perk that you can invite your friends to the platform if you have a good experience and get paid for doing so.

Pricing & Fees

One advantage of iTrustCapital is its simple fee structure and low fees. And unlike some other crypto IRA platforms, you don’t pay setup fees, potentially saving hundreds of dollars right out of the gate.

Conversion Fee

A lack of monthly account fees is also a perk of iTrustCapital since some of its competitors charge ongoing fees. Crypto trading fees are also reasonable, and if you trade using an exchange like Coinbase or Gemini, you’re paying similar fees anyway.

Granted, some exchanges like Binance are a bit better on crypto trading fees than iTrustCapital. However, these exchanges don’t let you invest in an IRA directly, so it’s not exactly a fair comparison.

iTrustCapital Alternatives

Crypto IRA investing has boomed in popularity in recent years as digital assets have gotten more attention. This also means there are numerous crypto IRA companies in the space that compete with iTrustCapital.

iTrustCapital is one of the best choices because of its low fee structure. But some alternatives are also low-fee and support more cryptos and alternative assets.

Here’s how iTrustCapital compares to Alto CryptoIRA and BitcoinIRA, two other popular companies in the space:

The main downside of iTrustCapital is its limited cryptocurrency support. But if you’re only investing in leading cryptos like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and a select few coins, this isn’t a drawback.

Alto is your best option if you want the most investing selection possible, and it has the same fee structure as iTrustCapital. BitcoinIRA is one of the most beginner-friendly options, but its fee structure is steep in comparison to iTrustCapital.

Account Opening Process

You can open an iTrustCapital in a few minutes from its homepage. You start by creating an account with your name, email, phone number, and password. After confirming your email address, there’s a “Start My Application” button in your iTrustCapital dashboard you use to finish your application.

iTrustCapital follows know your customer (KYC) requirements. This means you provide your name, address, and verify your identity to use its services.

After providing this information, you choose the type of IRA you want to open and how you’re funding it. If you’re funding with cash contributions, you can send a check or wire transfer or use ACH payments. You can add multiple funding events as well.

You also add at least one primary beneficiary for your IRA. Afterwards, your application goes into review and iTrustCapital may email you with updates or to ask additional questions.

If everything checks out, you sign one last DocuSign document via email and your account is good to go. This process generally takes one to two business days. Note that IRA transfers can take one to two weeks and rollovers can take two to six weeks on average.

Safety & Security

As mentioned, iTrustCapital uses Coinbase as its custodian. This means your cryptocurrencies are held in offline, cold storage by one of the leading exchanges in the world. You also benefit from Coinbase’s $320 million insurance policy that guards against theft, hacks, and cybersecurity breaches.

Furthermore, iTrustCapital integrated with Fireblocks in early 2022. Fireblocks provides additional infrastructure security for the buy and sell side for digital assets. Currently, Fireblocks works with over 650 partners and has helped secure the transfer of over $2 trillion in digital assets.

You can’t hold crypto in your own wallet, regardless of whether it's a software wallet like Trust Wallet or a hardware wallet like Ledger. This is to maintain IRS compliance since assets must be custodied.

As for gold and silver, the Royal Canadian Mint securely stores your assets. Overall, these insurance policies and partnerships mean that iTrustCapital is safe and secure to use.

Customer Service

You can contact iTrustCapital customer support through email by using its contact page on its website. Alternatively, you can schedule a call with a customer service representative or call 562-600-8437.

The company has a 4.5 star rating on Trustpilot with over 2,000 reviews. Many reviews cite a simple, fast onboarding process and timely customer service.

Most of the negative reviews, though rare, complain about a lack of in-depth trading features. But iTrustCapital isn’t a crypto exchange, so you’re going to have fewer trading options than if you use exchanges like Coinbase or Binance. This is the trade-off you have to make if you want to invest in your IRA with crypto.

The Bottom Line

There are several popular crypto IRA investing platforms out there. But if you want a simple account creation process and low fees, iTrustCapital is one of the best choices.

This is especially true if you don’t need 100+ cryptos to choose from and just want to invest in a select few coins. If you’re looking for more alternative assets and crypto support, Alto is superior. But the two platforms currently have identical fees.

As for crypto trading itself, using exchanges gives you more control and research tools. Many exchanges and crypto savings accounts also let you deposit your crypto to earn passive income.

However, for standalone crypto IRA investing, iTrustCapital is one of the industry leaders for a reason.
